The purpose of this study was to revalidate the current British Army Physical Selection Standards (recruits) [PSS(R)] for Junior, Infantry and Soldier Pre-conditioning Course applicants. Participants were tested to an individual maximum effort at the end of their Phase 1 training course on three role related physical tasks; a Single Lift (SL), Carry and Loaded March (LM). Participants’ physical performance at Army selection was used to produce statistical models to predict their performance on the role related tasks at the end of training. These statistical models provide the Army with evidence to underpin a role related, gender and age free selection process, which is able to identify applicants with the greatest potential of passing their physical output tests at the end of phase 1 training.
